Ships Going South
Local Humane Society ships in dogs from the south, but lets local pounds dogs die?

I volunteer for a branch of the CT Humane Society. While I do see that this is a very well-funded, publically well-meaning organization with plenty of dedicated employees and volunteers that do A LOT for the dog world…I also see a bit of a problem with their methods.

We have several local city-funded kill shelters that routinely get dogs that have ten days to find a home (facing euthanisia after the ten day period has expired). MANY, but not ALL, of these dogs are Pit Bull mixes. But I have seen some great dogs (pit bull or not) go into these pounds and never come out.

My problem with the Humane Society is that we get shipments of dogs from the southern states. Does anyone have any idea why we would be taking in southern dogs and letting our own dogs die?

Is there a legal issue that could be preventing the Humane Society from getting a hold of these pound dogs? Or is this just another screwed up organization?

You know, our shelter took in cats and kittens from down South after the hurricane. I was less than thrilled. We have NO shortage of cats in need in our area, so I see NO need to take them in from other states. They brought SEVERAL strange illnesses, and had a lot of other issues. Ended up costing us more than anyone thought. I think it was somewhat of a “relations and publicity” thing done by the higher ups. Don’t think it worked.

I think it is messed up idea, and NO shelters in any states should be allowed to import shelter animals. There cannot be a shelter that is so “in need” of animals to fill it’s cages!!!!!

**I DO feel bad for all the displaced animals that Katrina left behind……but shelters are so full everywhere. It is not helping the problem at all.
