Sheath Samurai Sword
I have a Japanese SAMURAI sword from World War 2 that was used in battle of okinawa. How much is it worth?
My grandfather was a Marine in Okinawa japan. His unit was one of the first to land in Okinawa. He brought back my items from the war including 2 japanese samurai swords both used in combat. I know they are extremely rare due to towards the end of the war the japanese started melting the down for the steel. Well my father has one and I have one. The one I have has a heavy metal sheath and a locking mechanism to keep the blade in the sheath and it has a wrapped ray skin handle. small amount of ware and rust but not bad at all. how much are they worth?
please oil the blade to stop the rust. do not try do take the sword apart for cleaning unless you are an expert. Also do not clean the rust unless you are an expert
a lot depends on what the sword actually is
if it is an officer’s sword, manufactured at the time of WW1 or WW2 then it can be worth up to a few thousand- depending on the condition (hence do NOT tinker with it unless you’re an expert)
it also might be an older blade- eg a real samurai blade from the 15th , or earlier century- just “adapted” to look like a normal officers sword and carried to battle (happened quite often)
if that is the case- then the blade could be worth a lot. also depending on the condition
best option is to examine the sword, look for markings – like manufacturer’s marks. Either a stamp on the blade or japanese letters. photograph them and show to an expert
just oil the blade. any expert buyer will want to clean the blade by himself
